Surgical Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:

A Surgical Technician provides essential surgical support under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Clinical Supervisor. This role involves collaborating with the surgical team, assisting the surgeon with instrumentation needs, and acting as a liaison among the physician, patient, and family members. The Surgical Technician is also responsible for the orientation of new personnel, call coverage, attending team meetings, and assisting general surgery as needed. Participation in interdisciplinary or departmental committees may also be required. A successful Surgical Technician will demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to provide care for all general procedures based on specific chronological age, developmental age, and psycho-social maturity.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in surgical procedures by providing appropriate instruments and supplies.
• Collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure optimal patient care.
• Act as a liaison between the physician, patient, and family.
• Participate in the orientation process for new staff members.
• Cover on-call requirements as needed.
• Attend team meetings and contribute to discussions.
• Assist in general surgery and other departments as needed.
• Engage in departmental committees as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician School or an accredited school of Licensed Practical Nursing.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technician, with at least 1 year of travel or temporary experience.
• If a graduate of an accredited school of Licensed Practical Nursing, one year of surgical technician experience is required; two years is preferred.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:

• Preferred: Passage of the National Surgical Technician Certification Exam.
• Required: Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association.
