Surgical Assistant (First Assist)

Position Summary

The Surgical Assistant (First Assist) works under the direct supervision of the surgeon, providing critical support during surgical procedures. Candidates should possess extensive knowledge of surgical anatomy, operative techniques, and principles of asepsis and infection control. The role requires maintenance of clinical competence in pre-operative assessments and intraoperative procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assist with various surgical specialties efficiently and appropriately.
• Participate actively in room turnover and demonstrate proper positioning, draping, and prepping procedures.
• Contribute to the reduction of surgical supply expenses by minimizing waste, as measured by audits.
• Adhere to AORN Standards and Recommended Practices for infection prevention.
• Engage in the “Time Out” process for all surgical cases prior to incision, as per the Universal Protocol.

Qualifications

• Required Experience: Minimum of three (3) years as a Surgical Assistant with expertise in orthopedics, neuro/orthopedic spine, general/robotics, urology/gynecology, and vascular surgery.
• At least one (1) year of travel experience as a Surgical Assistant.
• Education: Graduate of an accredited program for Physician Assistants or Surgical Assistants, or an International Medical Graduate.
• Licensure: CPR certification is required.

Additional Information

Candidates are required to complete necessary Net Learning modules within one week of acceptance, which includes a comprehensive amount of learning material. Immediate availability is preferred.
