Job Description
This position is focused on providing comprehensive Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) evaluations and treatments which significantly influence patients’ functional abilities. The role demands a professional demeanor, respect for confidentiality, and adherence to standards of service excellence. Services should comply with hospital standards, regulatory requirements, and professional guidelines established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct assessments, evaluations, and develop therapy treatment plans tailored to pediatric patients.
- Implement, supervise, and adapt therapy plans based on patient responses to enhance treatment outcomes.
- Participate in care conferences and maintain regular communication with healthcare providers to review patient status and needs.
- Document patient encounters, including diagnoses, treatment plans, and recommendations in compliance with organizational policies.
- Provide timely therapy services in both inpatient and outpatient settings, as assigned.
- Lead educational programs for patients and families to promote self-care and independence in healthcare.
- Conduct home assessments and provide therapy services in diverse settings, including community health initiatives.
- Assist in clinical operation and administration as needed, including maintaining supplies and cleanliness of the clinical area.
- Educate staff and patients on SLP-related topics, contributing to professional development in the department.
- Engage in continuous professional development and compliance with regulatory and practice standards.
Education and Licensure Requirements
- Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited program.
- Certification of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) is required within the first year of employment.
- Valid license in Speech Language Pathology from the State of Alaska.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
- Current Alaska Driver’s License is required.
- Clinical Competency and High Risk Competency assessments must be completed within specified timeframes.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of one year of experience in a clinical setting, with emphasis on pediatrics preferred.
- Experience in acute care and subspecialties (dysphagia, neurology) is preferred.
- Familiarity with various swallowing assessments (e.g., MBSS, FEEs) is advantageous.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of speech production and swallowing physiology, as well as related neuroanatomy.
- Proficiency in executing standardized assessments and creating tailored treatment plans.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective patient and staff interactions.
- Familiarity with information technology and software applications relevant to the role.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong judgment and problem-solving abilities in various workplace situations.
Working Conditions
This role may involve exposure to diverse environments, including community settings and remote locations. The position can be physically demanding and may require lifting and transporting patients safely. Personal protective measures must be observed due to potential exposure to infectious organisms.
