General Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs various technical, clerical, and information systems-related procedures in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, specimen procurement, and other laboratory areas as requested on patient specimens, control materials, and proficiency samples. This skilled individual ensures timely and accurate test results for physicians by operating laboratory equipment in accordance with established policies. The MLT is responsible for conducting laboratory tests efficiently and accurately to deliver high-quality patient care, while also monitoring quality control procedures and participating in the Laboratory Quality Improvement program.

Essential Job Duties

  • Analyze laboratory findings for accuracy of results.
  • Enter data from medical tests and clinical results into computer systems for storage.
  • Set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Prepare and analyze slides and specimens, including human blood, tissue, or other cells.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain equipment for quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Establish and monitor quality assurance programs to ensure accuracy of laboratory results.
  • Collect and study blood samples to determine cellular counts, morphology, blood group, type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes.
  • Conduct chemical analysis of body fluids, such as blood and urine, to identify normal and abnormal components.
  • Assist in identifying abnormalities in samples, including malignancies and genetic issues.
  • Provide technical information about test results to physicians, family members, and researchers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize work (30%): Manage time effectively to complete technical tasks within realistic time limits, controlling laboratory equipment and adjusting instruments for procedures.
  • Analyze results (30%): Interpret laboratory results with considerable judgment across various laboratory areas including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and urinalysis.
  • Maintain lab section (20%): Ensure instruments and lab sections are well-maintained, conducting scheduled maintenance and monitoring consumables.
  • Specimen collection (20%): Perform specimen collection on patients of all age groups, including venipuncture and capillary draws, while instructing nursing staff on proper sample collection methods.
