General Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs a variety of technical, clerical, and information systems-related procedures in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, specimen procurement, and other laboratory areas as needed using patient specimens, control materials, and proficiency samples. The MLT operates laboratory equipment adhering to established policies to provide timely and accurate test results to physicians. This skilled individual is responsible for performing laboratory tests efficiently and accurately to ensure high-quality patient care. They will monitor quality control procedures while actively participating in the Laboratory Quality Improvement program.
Essential Job Duties
- Analyze laboratory findings to verify the accuracy of results.
- Enter data from analyses of medical tests and clinical results into the computer for storage.
- Set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Prepare and analyze slides and specimens of human blood, tissue, or other cells.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analyses, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology.
- Establish and monitor quality assurance programs to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
- Collect and examine blood samples to determine the number of cells, their morphology, blood group, blood type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes using microscopic techniques.
- Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, including blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components.
- Help identify abnormalities in samples, such as malignancies, bacteria, parasites, or genetic irregularities.
- Assist in blood-typing or other routine blood tests.
- Provide technical information regarding test results to physicians, family members, and researchers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities
- Organize Work: Manage time effectively to complete technical tasks within realistic time limits. Control laboratory equipment and adjust instruments to perform laboratory procedures. Use computers to operate laboratory instruments and to calculate, record, evaluate, and transmit data. (30%)
- Analyze Results: Analyze and interpret laboratory results with considerable judgment across multiple laboratory disciplines, including hematology, chemistry, special chemistry, serology, blood bank, microbiology, and urinalysis. (30%)
- Instrument Maintenance: Maintain instruments and lab sections as assigned by the Lab Manager, including scheduled maintenance and monitoring consumables. (20%)
- Specimen Collection: Perform specimen collection on patients of all age groups, including venipuncture, capillary draws, and culturing sites, while providing instruction to nursing staff on proper sample collection methods. (20%)
