Registered Nurse (RN) – Psychiatric

Job Duties

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Psychiatric Unit is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients facing emotional and psychological challenges. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting intake assessments through interviews with patients and their families to gather relevant case history.
  • Planning and delivering tailored nursing care for patients based on their specific needs.
  • Making nursing diagnoses regarding patients’ medical and emotional status and recommending appropriate treatment options.
  • Consulting with psychiatrists and other behavioral health professionals to develop suitable treatment plans.
  • Administering psychotropic medications and monitoring patient reactions and side effects.
  • Arranging for additional medical attention when necessitated by patient condition.
  • Helping clients understand the nature of their emotional disturbances and reinforce the importance of treatment acceptance.
  • Maintaining a safe and secure environment for both staff and patients.
  • Assessing vital signs related to pain and ensuring adequate pain management treatments are implemented.
  • Documenting all patient information accurately in medical records and adhering to physicians’ orders.
  • Ensuring patient confidentiality and maintaining compliance with record-keeping standards.
  • Performing administrative tasks, including filing, answering phones, typing, and completing electronic progress notes.
  • Providing high-quality, courteous service to patients and the public, addressing requests, and making appropriate referrals as needed.

Requirements

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Certification.
  • New York RN License required.
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in a psychiatric or similar setting.

Schedule

This position requires rotating shift schedules, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, with the potential for on-call and callback assignments based on unit needs.
