Registered Nurse (RN) – Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Position Overview

This role is primarily focused on providing care for pediatric cardiac patients within a specialized environment, encompassing both Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) and general PICU patients. As an integral member of the healthcare team, the Registered Nurse will leverage their clinical experience to deliver exceptional care to patients with complex medical needs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), with at least 1 year in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU).
  • First-time travelers are welcome.
  • Required licenses and certifications: BLS (Basic Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess experience and proficiency in the following:

  • Cardiac patient care, including a variety of cardiac diagnoses and surgeries.
  • Aseptic and sterile technique.
  • Basic dressing changes and management of various medical devices, including but not limited to:
    • Ventilator and tracheostomy management
    • Suctioning
    • G/GJ/J-tube and NG tube management
    • Chest tube management
    • Epidurals and PCA pump management
    • Foley catheter insertion and management
    • Central line care, dressing changes, and blood draws
    • Peripheral lab draws
    • Patient discharge processes
  • Soft skills: Quick learner, critical thinker, effective time management, and strong engagement with patients and families.
  • Experience with ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and peritoneal dialysis is preferred but not required.

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

The role includes caring for pediatric patients with a mix of medical and surgical needs, predominantly in a PCICU setting. Common patient types and diagnoses include:

  • Cardiovascular/thoracic conditions (e.g., congenital heart defects, post-surgical care).
  • Respiratory conditions (e.g., high-flow oxygen therapy, CPAP, BiPAP, asthma).
  • Surgical cases (e.g., appendectomies, g-tubes, bowel obstructions).
  • Patients requiring chemotherapy.
  • Traumatic injuries.
  • Care for patients up to age 30 during high-demand periods.

Work Environment

The facility is a Level II Trauma Center with 22 PICU beds and an average census of 10-11 patients per day. The electronic medical record system in use is EPIC, and experience with this system is preferred.

Schedule

  • Shifts: 07:00 – 19:30 and 19:00 – 07:30.
  • Weekend rotation: Every other weekend unless otherwise requested.
  • Floating to MedSurg, ED, NICU, or sitter roles may be required as needed.

Dress Code

Professional solid color scrubs are required. Long sleeves must be able to be pulled above the elbow, and long hair must be secured. Staff is permitted to wear team attire on designated spirit days.
