Pediatric Critical Care Registered Nurse (PCICU RN)

Position Overview

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Pediatric Critical Care Registered Nurse (PCICU RN) to provide high-quality care to pediatric patients with various cardiac and critical conditions. This role is essential for managing complex cases in a dynamic environment, primarily focusing on patients within the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) while also supporting mixed PICU patients as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive nursing care to mixed PICU/PCICU patients, including those with neuro, cardiac, and respiratory conditions.
  • Manage and monitor patients recovering from cardiac surgeries and other critical interventions.
  • Perform essential nursing procedures including ventilator management, tracheostomy care, suctioning, and tube management (G/GJ/J-tube, NG tubes, chest tubes).
  • Administer medications and therapeutic interventions, including PCA pumps and epidurals, ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques.
  • Conduct central line dressing changes, central line blood draws, and peripheral lab draws per protocol.
  • Facilitate the discharge planning process and provide education to patients and families.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

  • Cardiovascular/Thoracic patients with congenital heart defects and post-surgical recovery.
  • Respiratory patients requiring advanced support like CPAP and BiPAP.
  • Surgical patients post-appendectomies, g-tube placements, and other interventions.
  • Patients receiving chemotherapy and those with various trauma cases.
  • Occasional care for patients up to age 30 during peak demand periods.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience, with at least 1 year in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU).
  • Current BLS and PALS certifications are required.
  • Proficiency in essential clinical skills including dressing changes, infusion management, and care of invasive devices.
  • Ability to function effectively in a high-paced environment and demonstrate strong critical thinking and time management skills.
  • Previous experience with ECMO and peritoneal dialysis preferred, though not mandatory.

Work Environment and Schedule

  • Location: Near [City, State]
  • Shifts: 0700-1930 and 1900-0730
  • Weekend rotations: Every other weekend is standard, with potential accommodations available upon request.
  • Floating to MedSurg, ED, NICU, or providing patient assistance as needed may be required.

Additional Information

  • Experience with the EPIC electronic medical record system is preferred.
  • Professional attire is required; all staff must maintain a neat appearance with scrubs in solid colors, free of graphics and logos.
