Job Overview
Join our compassionate healthcare team as a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse (RN) where you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality care to critically ill children in need of intensive care services, while also supporting general pediatric patients.
Unit Information
- Beds: 15-bed Pediatric Unit; 5-bed PICU
- Patient Types: Ages 0-18 for general pediatrics and PICU; includes stable medical cases, respiratory illnesses, diabetes, septicemia, trauma, and various surgical post-operative care.
- Patient Ratios:
- General Pediatrics: 1 RN to 5 patients
- PICU: 1 RN to 1 mechanically ventilated patient or titratable drips; 1 RN to 2-3 stable PICU patients
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive physical assessments of patients from infancy through adulthood.
- Evaluate symptoms and vital signs to ensure appropriate care.
- Administer medications as prescribed and educate patients and families on treatment plans.
- Utilize EPIC charting system proficiently for accurate electronic documentation.
- Provide care for mechanically ventilated patients and manage titratable drips within the PICU environment.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of PICU RN experience required.
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) not required
- Education: Completion of a nursing education program approved by the Board of Nursing; valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Dakota.
- Skills: Strong assessment skills, proficient in IV management, and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Support and Resources
- CNA support with a ratio of 1:8 for assistance in patient care.
- Phlebotomy support and resource nurses available on the unit.
- In-house respiratory therapy and pediatric pharmacy services.
- 24/7 availability of hospitalists and intensivists, ensuring adequate physician coverage.
Scheduling and Orientation
- Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend required.
- Holiday Expectations: All major holidays on a rotating basis.
- Orientation: One day of facility orientation and two days of unit orientation with a preceptor.
