Registered Nurse – Surgery/OR

Position Summary: Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Directs and coordinates nursing care for patients based on nursing practice standards. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to provide quality, cost-effective, and efficient care, achieving the best possible patient outcomes. Serves as a resource person when required. Applies age-specific considerations and cultural diversity when rendering patient care. Responsible for the care of patients from birth to elderly during pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases.

Position Qualifications:

• Minimum Education: Must have completed a program of education in nursing from an NLN approved institution. Associate Degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred.
• Minimum Experience: 1 to 2 years of OR experience.
• License, Certification, Registration: Must be licensed in good standing as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Alaska. Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required; PALS preferred. The successful candidate will be required to pass and maintain competencies for this position. National Certification in Surgery/PACU is preferred.

Equipment/Tools:

• Office equipment (i.e., computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine)
• Medical equipment such as cardiac monitors and autoclaves

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Proficient oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to practice nursing as described in the Alaska Status regarding the practice of Registered Nursing.
• Cognitive and technical knowledge required with the ability to manage care across the continuum of care.
• Flexibility with work schedule and ability for independent action within prescribed limits.
• Capability to utilize the nursing process in patient care provision, including administering treatments, medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, providing education for patients and families, and collaborating with other professionals.
• Knowledge of AORN standards required.
• Understanding of medical terminology.
• Ability to work effectively in a patient care setting.
• Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Document actions involved in care delivery and follow guidelines and procedures. Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public.
• Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Responsible for overseeing Administrative Assistants, Schedulers, and CSR Technicians in collaboration with the Charge Nurse.
