Job Summary

The Registered Nurse in the Mother/Baby unit provides specialized care for women of childbearing age and their newborns. The role involves understanding unit workflow, policies, and procedures within the postpartum unit, while delivering high-quality patient care. This position includes assessing risk factors, providing education, and managing patient needs effectively.

Unit Specifications

• Number of Beds: 26
• Patient Ratios: 6-8 patients per nurse
• Unit Staffing: RNs, no unit secretary, limited use of Patient Care Technicians
• Type of Equipment: Vitals machine, glucometer, computer, TCB, postpartum supplies
• Documentation System: CPN, Meditech
• Scheduling Requirements: Varied; typically involves hard-to-staff shifts and weekend coverage every 3rd week
• Floating Policy: Within women’s services unless cross-trained to pediatrics or NICU

Responsibilities

• Recognize and follow unit workflow, processes, policies, and procedures in the postpartum setting.
• Assess and identify risk factors including sepsis, venous thromboembolism (VTE/DVT), and other complications.
• Provide discharge education to patients and families, along with thorough assessments.
• Manage patient pain effectively and prioritize care based on patient acuity.
• Utilize communication frameworks such as AIDET and BSSR in interactions.

Qualifications

• Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
• Must hold certifications in BLS and NRP.

Dress Code

Required uniform includes black scrub pants and a Caribbean blue scrub top, vest, or jacket.
