Registered Nurse (RN)

Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Med/Surg nursing team. This role requires a strong background in trauma care and proficiency in electronic medical records, specifically EPIC charting.

Location

This position is located in the Jackson, MS area, within a 50-mile radius qualification for the traveler rate. Local candidates are welcome to apply at 80% of the traveler rate.

Key Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of RN experience, including at least 6 months of recent Level 1 trauma experience or experience in larger facilities (400+ beds) with significant surgical and high-acuity patient exposure.
  • Proficiency in EPIC charting; no training will be provided during orientation.
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment is highly preferred but not mandatory.
  • FLU vaccination is required. Medical accommodations may be requested with a note from a physician.
  • Completion of FBI fingerprinting is mandatory: can be processed in person at UMMC locations or through a remote process that may take 7-10 days.

Unit Details

The position is based on various Med/Surg units, including:

  • 2 West: 13 beds
  • 6 West: 14 beds
  • 7 South: 12 beds
  • 4 Wiser: 30 beds
  • 5 Wiser: 25 beds

Nurse-Patient Ratios

  • Typical ratios: 1:5 up to 1:6, adjusted for higher acuity patients.
  • Required certifications: BLS; charge nurses must hold ACLS certification.

Common Patient Conditions

The RN will encounter a variety of patient diagnoses, including:

  • General medical-surgical cases
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Diabetes
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Trauma
  • Acute kidney injury
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Respiratory illnesses

Working Hours and Conditions

  • Standard shift: 12 hours, either 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM.
  • No self-scheduling; management will do their best to accommodate preferred scheduling requests where possible.
  • Standard requirement: Every other weekend or two weekends per month, with flexibility based on department needs.
  • Holiday requirements will rotate among regular staff.
  • Floating may be necessary within the skill set across all Med/Surg units.

Additional Information

Each unit has dedicated nurse managers and educators, with support staff including nurse aides and respiratory therapists available to assist as needed. Orientation will include initial paperwork, system access training, unit tours, and hands-on experience with preceptors.
