Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Registered Nurse (RN) for our Medical-Surgical unit. This position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment, providing care for adult and pediatric patients with a variety of diagnoses. The average patient stay is approximately three days, and you will be responsible for managing a range of medical and surgical conditions.

Shift Details

  • Shift: 12-hour Night Shifts
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule
  • Holiday Requirement: Participation in the permanent staff rotation
  • Floating: Not required, but opportunities available to float to telemetry or OB with experience

Unit Information

  • Type: Medical-Surgical
  • Beds: 45 total (adult and pediatric med-surg telemetry combined)
  • Nurse to Patient Ratios: 1:5
  • Common Diagnoses: COPD, post-operative care, GI bleeds, OBGYN surgeries, orthopedic conditions, septic patients, altered mental status, chest pain rule-out, stroke, cellulitis, and alcohol withdrawal.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a medical-surgical unit.
  • Pediatric experience preferred; travelers without pediatric experience will not be assigned pediatric patients.
  • Required Certifications: BLS and ACLS; PALS certification is preferred.
  • Experience with telemetry and must have the ability to manage heparin and protonix drips.

Additional Information

The Medical-Surgical unit operates with a collaborative approach, with a hospitalist available onsite 24/7. Nurses on this unit are not required to interpret telemetry strips, as monitor technicians will assist with this function. The department supports self-scheduling to some degree, with yearly schedules being prepared 30-45 days in advance.

Orientation for new hires will consist of 2-3 days, including a team-building scavenger hunt to familiarize staff with the unit.

Dress Code

Nurses are required to wear navy blue scrubs while on duty.
