Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical

Job Description

We are seeking a qualified Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Medical-Surgical team. This position involves providing comprehensive care to adult and pediatric Med/Surg patients in a fast-paced environment.

Unit Information

• Unit Type: Med Surg (Medical Surgical)
• Number of Beds: 45 beds (adult and pediatric Med/Surg telemetry combined)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1 to 5

Common Patient Diagnoses

• Med/Surg patients
• COPD
• Post-operative care
• GI bleeds
• OBGYN surgeries
• Orthopedic issues
• Sepsis
• Altered Mental Status
• Chest Pain (r/o)
• Stroke
• Cellulitis
• Alcohol Withdrawal

Shift Details

• Shift Length: 12 hours
• Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or four weekend shifts in a four-week schedule
• Holiday Requirement: Work into regular staff rotation

Orientation

• Orientation is 2-3 days, including a scavenger hunt on one of the days.

Qualifications

• Years of Experience: 2-3 years in specialty, with pediatric experience preferred.
• Required Certifications:
  • BLS Certification
  • ACLS (AHA) Certificate
  • PALS certification preferred
• Key Skills:
  • Tele monitoring experience
  • Ability to titrate Heparin drips

Unit Dynamics

• Nurses do not need to read and interpret telemetry strips, as monitor techs are available.
• Charge Nurse serves as team lead without taking patient assignments.
• Certified Nursing Assistants work varied shifts, with no tech coverage from 1am-7am.
• Available respiratory equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow devices.

Floating Requirements

While floating is not required, nurses may float to telemetry or OB units if they possess the necessary experience.

Scheduling

Schedules are created 30-45 days in advance and allow for some degree of self-scheduling.

Additional Notes

This is a very fast-paced unit with patients moving in and out quickly; the average length of stay is around three days. Candidates must have 2-3 years of relevant experience and be prepared for a demanding work environment.
