About the Facility
This facility is a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and is recognized as a Primary Stroke Center.
Travel Opportunities
First-time travelers are welcome. A minimum of 18 months of experience in MedSurg and/or ICU is required, with EPIC or Cerner experience mandatory. For candidates with only ICU experience, Cerner is required.
Unit Assignments
Travelers will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation.
Patient Care Ratios
- Typical patient ratio: 1:4, although it may range from 1:4 to 1:6.
- With a lower patient load, RNs are expected to assist with turning patients, baths, and activities of daily living (ADLs).
- A high standard of care is expected with a lower patient load.
Unit Information
6 North Trauma Surgical
- Beds: 23
- Patient Types: General Surgery and Vascular surgeries
- Skills Required: Trauma/surgical experience, wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, medication administration/documentation, and escalations (minimum of 1 year experience).
5 South Neuroscience
- Beds: 33
- Patient Types: CVA, TBI, Seizure, Acute Mental Status Changes, Spinal Fusion, Craniotomy, Degenerative Diseases, post-trauma, angiogram
- Skills Required: IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG, NGT, Colostomy/Ostomy, wound care, chest tube care, surgical site care, C-Collar, abdominal binders, and restraints.
5 North MedSurg/Oncology
- Beds: 39 (including 2 Charge RNs with no patient assignment)
- Patient Types: All except stroke and myocardial infarction; includes palliative care and ETOH withdrawal; primarily MS/Oncology patients in a high acuity, fast-paced environment.
- Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 for RNs and LPNs.
- Skills Required: Trach care, chest tubes, PEG tubes, wound care, drains, Foley catheters, IV starts; chemo administration preferred if certified.
3 South Orthopedics
- Beds: 20
- Patient Types: Orthopedic and spine patients including joint replacements, fractures, and fusions.
- Skills Required: PCA pumps, wound care (negative pressure dressing), dressing changes, Foley catheters, and drains (hemovacs/JP drains).
3 North MS/Ortho/Urology
- Beds: 23
- Patient Types: Urology, ENT, orthopedic, and MedSurg.
- Skills Required: Trach care, wound care, wound vacs, IV starts, CVL dressing changes, and compliance with nurse-driven Foley protocol.
Required Certifications
- BLS
- NIHSS
Unit Support and Technology
- CNA ratio: 1:10-12 for vital signs, ADLs, and glucose checks when available.
- Charge nurse available, rarely takes assignment.
- Phlebotomy and IV/VAT team support available.
- Telemetry monitoring is provided by dedicated techs; RNs are required to interpret telemetry strips and confirm readings every four hours.
- EMR: Cerner is the primary system used, with EPIC experience considered.
