ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

Overview

The ICU Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive and high-quality care to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The role requires strong clinical skills, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively within a dynamic healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver direct patient care to ICU patients with various critical conditions.
  • Monitor and assess patient health status, including vital signs and laboratory results.
  • Administer medications and perform procedures as directed by medical protocols.
  • Titrate drips and manage complex medical equipment.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.
  • Educate patients and their families about treatment plans and health management.
  • Participate in unit staffing and management activities.

Qualifications

  • Valid RN license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of critical care nursing experience.
  • Current certifications: ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS.

Unit Information

  • Type: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Number of Beds: 33
  • Average Daily Census: 16 patients
  • Nurse to Patient Ratios: 1:2-3 for adults
  • Common patient diagnoses include trauma, cardiac issues, overdose, sepsis, stroke, and renal failure.
  • Resources include healthcare support techs and nurse aides based on census.

Schedule & Orientation

  • Shifts: 12-hour day shifts (0630-1830) or night shifts (1830-0630).
  • Weekend requirements: Every other weekend.
  • Holiday requirements: Minimum of 2 holidays within the contract period.
  • Unit-specific orientation: 1 shift.
  • RTO Policy: Upfront notification of 7 or fewer days is required for time off requests; additional RTO requests will not be approved after submission.

Additional Information

RNs are required to read, interpret, and document telemetry strips. Floating may occur to the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or Medical-Surgical Unit, maintaining similar patient ratios. Compliance with fingernail policy and driver’s license requirements is mandatory.
