Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

• Beds: 32
• Average Patients/Day: 90-110
• Minimum Years of Experience:
  • Traditional Traveler: 2+ years of Emergency Department experience
  • Crisis Assessment Program (CAP): 4 years minimum

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses

• General Emergency Department complaints
• Abdominal pain
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath (SOB)
• Behavioral health patients
• Geriatric patients
• Occasional labor and delivery cases (typically transferred)

Patient Ratios

• Registered Nurse (RN): 1:4
• Patient Care Technician (PCT): 1:6-12

Required Credentials

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
• Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) 1 & 2 or Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)

Skills Required

Support Within the Department

• Patient Care Technicians (PCT)
• Receptionists/Health Unit Coordinators (HUC) available 24/7
• Charge Nurse (does not take patients)
• Respiratory Therapists (RT) available 24/7
• Hospitalists available 24/7
• Emergency Department doctors and mid-level providers
• Lab draws conducted by phlebotomy, nurses, and technicians

Technology/Equipment

• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): EPIC
• IV Pump: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

Orientation and Scheduling

• General hospital orientation followed by 1-2 shifts on the unit.
• 2-3 independent shifts to learn facility flow (for CAP, work “in the numbers” for 2-3 weeks).
• Weekend rotation: every other weekend
• Holiday expectations: as needed
• Shift times:
  • 0600-1830
  • 0900-2130
  • 1100-2330
  • 1200-0000
  • 1500-0330
  • 1800-0630
