Registered Nurse (RN)
General Information
This position is situated within a 35-bed acute care facility that encompasses various critical care areas.
Unit Information
- Emergency Room (ER): 9 treatment spaces (8 beds and 1 hallway space)
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU): 4 beds
- Medical-Surgical (Med/Surg): 15 beds
Experience Requirements
Minimal experience required is 1.5 years in acute care, with preference for Med/Surg, Emergency Department, or ICU experience.
Applicants with 2+ years of experience will be considered, including first-time travelers if they meet the experience requirement.
Travelers must reside more than 100 miles away from the facility.
Permanently employed staff must wait one full year to return as travelers.
Patient Types
Care will be provided for patients of all ages with the following conditions:
- Sepsis
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Alcohol Withdrawal
- Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
- Myocardial Infarction (MI)
- Trauma
- Stroke
Patient Ratios
- Emergency Room: 1:3–4
- Intensive Care Unit: 1:1–2 (dependent on acuity/age)
- Medical-Surgical: 1:5 (dependent on acuity/age)
Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- TNCC
- PALS
- NIHSS (preferred)
- CPI (preferred)
Required Education
Completion of an accredited nursing education program; must hold a Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the South Dakota Board of Nursing.
Skills Required
- General Emergency Department experience
- Critical care experience for ICU holds
- Trauma experience
- Complex wound care and dressing changes
- Conducting thorough nursing assessments
- Flexibility to work across all units (ED, ICU, and Med/Surg)
Support on the Unit
The unit is supported by:
- 1 Charge Nurse (serves as hospital coordinator)
- Phlebotomy services
- Resource Nurse (same as Charge Nurse)
- Respiratory Therapy services
- Hospitalist services, with APP coverage during nights
Charting System
Utilization of EPIC software is required.
Floating Policy
Travelers trained in all areas may be floated to the Emergency Room, Medical-Surgical unit, and/or Intensive Care Unit as necessary.
Orientation
Orientation for this position lasts 2 days.
Scheduling
Weekend rotation is required every other week, and holiday coverage is expected every other holiday. Time off requests can be approved for up to 7 days, with a requirement to extend the contract by one week for each week missed.
