Emergency Department Nurse

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department Nurse to join our dynamic team in a busy Level III trauma center. This role involves providing comprehensive care to a diverse patient population, including neonates, pediatrics, and geriatric patients. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in high-acuity emergency care and possess excellent critical thinking and clinical skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and administer medications using barcode scanning technology.
• Oversee medication drips and blood product administration.
• Conduct triage assessments; must pass the hospital’s Triage Test before triaging patients.
• Assist in the set-up of chest tubes and arterial lines.
• Support trauma and code cases, including splinting and utilizing BiPAP and ventilators.
• Stabilize and prepare patients for transfer to higher-level care facilities.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a high-volume, high-acuity emergency department.
• Current certifications in ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, and either PALS or ENPC, as well as TNCC.
• Experience in managing pediatric emergency medicine cases is highly preferred.
• Knowledge of ESI (Emergency Severity Index) is essential.
• Proficient in Point of Care Lab testing.

Patient Demographics

Our facility sees a wide range of patients from neonate to geriatric age groups, including medical and trauma cases. We handle various conditions, including stroke, cardiac issues, and behavioral health and substance use disorders.

Patient Ratios

The nurse-to-patient ratio varies from 1:3 to 1:5 based on patient acuity, ensuring quality care even in peak times.

Work Environment

The emergency department is organized into zones, with a dedicated 13-bed fast track area for lower acuity patients. Our team operates within a state-of-the-art electronic medical record (EMR) system, specifically Epic.

Shift Information

Shifts include:

• Day shifts: 7a-7p, 9a-9p
• Mid shifts: 10a-10p, 11a-11p, 12p-12a, 1p-1a, 2p-2a
• Evening shifts: 3p-3a
• Night shifts: 7p-7a

Additional Information

Weekend rotation requires working every other weekend, with some shifts possibly scheduled back-to-back. Flexibility in scheduling is essential.
