ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse Supervisor, the Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care for acutely and critically ill patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies, procedures, and philosophy. The Registered Nurse follows the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Additionally, the Registered Nurse provides leadership for ancillary staff, serves as a team leader, and acts as a preceptor, assisting in department functions while practicing within state nursing standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide direct observation of patients in accordance with the nursing plan of care.
• Assist nursing staff in creating and maintaining a safe patient environment.
• Develop individualized patient care plans based on assessment and evaluation of patient needs.
• Document health records accurately and in a timely manner.
• Maintain expertise in critical care nursing through continuing education and participation in workshops.
• Recognize and respond to adverse signs and symptoms in emergency situations.
• Monitor and adjust specialized equipment, interpreting electronic displays and cardiac rhythms.
• Delegate tasks and supervise activities of other nursing personnel as appropriate.
• Serve as charge nurse when assigned, providing guidance and direction to ancillary staff.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Contribute to patient experience by providing compassionate care and respect for patient privacy.
• Collaborate with medical staff to foster positive working relationships within the department.
• Assist with procedures and patient transport as needed.
• Focus on patient safety through appropriate nursing interventions and health education.
• Conduct assessments during patient admissions and before discharge, utilizing electronic health records (EHR).
• Administer medications per provider orders and maintain accountability for a safe patient environment.
• Respond to emergency and crisis situations within the facility.
• Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to process improvements.
• Provide interpretation services as needed.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications

• Strong understanding of applicable laws and regulations regarding healthcare.
• Familiarity with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and nursing standards of care.
• Knowledge of infection control practices within healthcare settings.
• Critical thinking skills and ability to work independently and within a team.
• Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft applications.
• Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand, walk, crouch, kneel, and occasionally sit. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in an office or hospital setting with potential exposure to hazardous materials, requiring adherence to safety protocols. Evening, weekend, and extended hours may be required.

Position Requirements

• Associate degree in Nursing; BSN strongly preferred.
• Minimum of two years of ICU clinical experience.
• Valid unrestricted nursing license from Arizona or a compact state.
• Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and PALS are required.
• CCRN certification is mandatory; TNCC certification is recommended.
• NRP certification required within six months of hire.
• Successful completion of background and employee health investigations.
