Surgical Assistant

Position Summary

The Surgical Assistant works under the direct supervision of the surgeon, exhibiting knowledge in surgical anatomy and physiology, operative techniques relevant to surgical procedures, and principles of asepsis and infection control. This role demands maintaining clinical competence in preoperative assessments and intraoperative performance as a First Assistant, with responsibilities that include patient preparation and operation during surgical procedures.

Required Experience

Experience is required in various specialties, including:

• Orthopedic Surgery
• Neuro/Orthopedic Spine Surgery
• General Surgery/Robotics
• Urology/Gynecology
• Vascular Surgery

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited program in Physician Assistant/Surgical Assistant or International Medical Graduate.
• Three (3) years of previous experience as a Surgical Assistant (SA).
• At least one (1) year of travel experience.
• Current CPR certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist efficiently with all surgical specialties.
• Actively participate in room turnover and demonstrate proper positioning, draping, and prepping procedures.
• Contribute to reducing surgical supply expense by minimizing waste, as assessed through audits.
• Adhere to AORN Standards and Recommended Practices for Infection Prevention.
• Participate actively and attentively in the “Time Out” process on all surgical cases prior to incision, utilizing the Universal Protocol.
