Job Description

This position requires urgent care experience.

The Clinical Assistant provides care to all age groups in a rural ambulatory care setting. This role supports efficient clinic operations and patient flow, maximizing provider time and ensuring access to care. Responsibilities include performing administrative and basic clinical tasks, as well as more complex procedures as assessed by competency evaluations. This position necessitates collaboration with providers, rooming patients, conducting point-of-care testing, answering phones, processing provider orders, and maintaining patient records.

Key Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Perform duties of Clinical Assistant 1 with additional expertise in medical terminology and clinical judgment.
• Prepare for patient visits by reviewing charts for necessary forms and follow-up procedures.
• Obtain and record age-appropriate vital signs per department protocol.
• Gather medical histories and confirm medication details.
• Document information accurately in patient charts and keep records organized.
• Ensure patient medication and immunization records are current.
• Recognize symptoms requiring prompt intervention and respond appropriately.
• Transport patients within the facility as needed.
• Manage patient care duties efficiently while maintaining clinic flow.
• Report and document any changes in patient conditions, unusual incidents, or safety breaches.
• Set up equipment and supplies for exams and minor procedures.
• Assist with procedures, treatments, and minor office surgeries.
• Provide specimen collection and Point of Care Testing (POCT) following proper protocols.
• Assist with patient ambulation and perform minor treatments.
• Provide basic patient education and discharge instructions under the provider’s direction.
• Sanitize exam rooms and ensure a clean environment.
• Maintain and organize exam room and lab supplies; perform inventory checks.
• Dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with infection control standards.
• Conduct Quality Assurance checks on equipment and maintain logs.
• Utilize computer-based health information systems and electronic health records effectively.
• Answer inquiries and assist staff, visitors, and patients in a friendly manner.

Other Functions

• Provide cross-coverage for peers to ensure effective patient flow.
• Participate in staff meetings and contribute to departmental goals and operations.
• Adhere to dress code and report unresolved issues to management.
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not involve supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required

• High school diploma or GED – required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification – required.
• Clinical Competency assessment completed within three months of hire and every three years – required.

Experience Required

• Completion of a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program or one year of experience as a Clinical Assistant 1 with successful completion of competency assessments; or
• One year experience as a CNA, EMT, or Community Health Aide; or
• One year of healthcare experience or two years of customer service experience; or
• Certified Nursing Assistant training or active EMT experience.

Knowledge of

• Clinic procedures related to patient visits and treatments.
• Age-appropriate vital signs and patient behaviors.
• Basic patient triage and medical terminology.

• Proficient in computer applications to manage medical databases.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal abilities.

Ability to

• Train in various Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems and accurately document patient information.

• Operate medical equipment
