Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

This unit is composed of 56 beds and provides care to adult patients with a diverse range of diagnoses, including congestive heart failure (CHF), acute renal failure (ARF), hepatitis, end-stage liver disease (ESLD), diabetes mellitus (DM), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), pneumonia, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremors.

Patient Ratios

• PCU/Telemetry RN: 1:4 (Days & Nights)
• Med/Surg RN: 1:5 (Days & Nights)
• CNA: 1:8 (Days & Nights)

Required Certifications

• RN: BLS, ACLS
• LPN: BLS required; ACLS preferred
• CNA: Certified CNA; BLS is not required

Required Education

The position requires the completion of an accredited nursing education program approved by a board of nursing.

Skills and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will possess effective verbal and written communication skills, complete thorough physical assessments, exhibit strong clinical judgment, maintain a professional bedside manner, and demonstrate teamwork, positivity, and adaptability. Specific responsibilities and skills for each role include:

• PCU RN:
  • Cardiac and vasoactive drip titration (approval may be needed for candidates without experience)
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • IV starts and blood product administration
  • CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter management
  • Insulin drips (both DKA and non-DKA)
  • Continuous bladder irrigation, chest tube maintenance
• Tele RN:
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • IV starts and blood product administration
  • CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter management
  • Insulin drips (non-DKA only)
  • Continuous bladder irrigation, chest tube maintenance
• LPN:
  • Must have acute care telemetry experience
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • IV starts and blood product administration
  • CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter management
  • Wound care understanding
• CNA:
  • Professional bedside manner, strong team player, and positive attitude are essential

Support on the Unit

• CNA support available with a 1:8 ratio (Days & Nights)
• Charge nurse: 2 for the unit (free-floating), available 24/7
• Phlebotomy: Available 24/7 for peripheral blood draws
• Resource Nurse: Available as staffing allows to assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers
• Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
• Hospitalist: In-house 24/7 for patient care
• Centralized Tele Monitoring: 24/7 assistance with telemetry reading and alarm notifications
• Violent Incident Response Team: Available on-site

Orientation

Orientation includes 2 days of classroom and online education followed by two 12-hour shifts with a preceptor.
