Registered Nurse (RN) – Oncology

General Information

This position is for an outpatient clinic focusing on a variety of oncology services. Applicants must have a minimum of 1.5 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year specifically in oncology. First-time travelers are not accepted; candidates must have completed at least one 13-week assignment. Travelers must reside more than 100 miles from the facility, and permanent staff members must wait one full year before returning as travelers.

Patient Demographics

The clinic serves patients aged 18 years and older, focusing on:

  • Medical Oncology/Hematology
  • Hematology
  • Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) – both pre-transplant and post-transplant

Workload

The average number of patients seen each day ranges from 15 to 25, including cancer support services.

Required Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with current South Dakota Board of Nursing approval
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Required Skills and Experience

  • Completion of an approved nursing education program
  • Experience with EPIC Ambulatory is necessary
  • Clinic experience, including patient rooming and vital sign checks
  • Medication reconciliation and weight assessments
  • Processing patients for infusions and maintaining communication
  • Chart checks and setup for procedures
  • Reviewing referrals

Support and Collaboration

Team members will receive support from:

  • Department Leadership
  • Clinical Associates (CA)
  • Charge Nurses
  • Team Leads
  • On-site laboratory services
  • Chemotherapy nurses for port access and blood draws
  • A team of 7 Medical Oncologists, typically paired with an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (ARNP)

Charting System

The electronic charting system utilized is EPIC Ambulatory.

Orientation and Training

New hires can expect a departmental orientation lasting approximately 5 days, tailored to individual skill sets and comfort levels.

Scheduling Information

Typical scheduling includes:

  • No weekends
  • No call shifts
  • No major holidays; availability for minor holidays required
  • Approval for up to 7 days off (excluding holidays) with a contract extension

Shift Details

Shifts are typically structured as four 10-hour shifts from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with days off determined by clinic needs each week.
