Registered Nurse (Oncology/Hematology)

Position Overview

The Oncology/Hematology Registered Nurse will provide comprehensive care for patients with hematological and oncology diagnoses. The nurse will be responsible for palliative care, inpatient hospice/end of life care, and specialized medical patients, including those with tracheostomies. Additional responsibilities include administering inpatient chemotherapy, managing symptoms, and providing supportive care for progressive diagnoses.

Unit Information

This position is located in a 21-bed unit designed for the treatment and care of patients with hematological and oncology disorders. The unit provides a collaborative environment with a focus on high-quality, patient-centered care.

Contract Length

The contract is initially posted for 26 weeks, with a preference for longer assignments, ranging from 26 to 51 weeks. Shorter contracts may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Shift Details

  • 12-hour shifts
  • 36 hours guaranteed per week
  • Every other weekend rotation

Holiday Rotation

Healthcare professionals may request one holiday off during the year, with specific provisions for federal and seasonal holidays.

Certification & Licensure Requirements

  • AHA BLS certification is required at the time of submission
  • Chemotherapy Certification is preferred
  • A valid RN license from Kansas or a multistate license is required. No hits allowed.

Qualifications

  • Education: ADN or BSN
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of acute care nursing experience required, with a preference for experience in oncology/hematology.

Charting System

The unit utilizes the Epic charting system; a test-out option is available for candidates.

Staffing Ratios

The typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6, and 1:4 when administering active chemotherapy infusions.

Uniform and Appearance Policy

Navy scrubs are required. The policy allows for visible tattoos, provided they are not offensive, discriminatory or inappropriate. Facial and ear piercings are permitted if they do not interfere with job duties and maintain a professional appearance.

Vaccination Requirements

All vaccination documentation is required, including proof of immunity or vaccination for Hepatitis B, MMR, and Varicella. Additionally, TDaP and influenza vaccinations are required or an exemption request during the flu season. Tuberculosis documentation is also required.
