Unit Description

• Number of Beds: 26
• Patient Ratios: 6-8 patients
• Staffing: RNs, limited use of PCTs during short staffing, no unit secretary
• Type of Equipment: Vitals machines, glucometers, computers, TCB, postpartum supplies
• Documentation System: CPN, Meditech
• Scheduling: Requires availability for varied staffing needs, including two hard-to-fill shifts weekly and one full weekend every third week
• Floating Policy: Limited to women’s services unless cross-trained in pediatrics or NICU

Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse in the Mother/Baby unit provides care for women of childbearing age and their newborns, focusing on:

• Recognizing workflow processes, policies, and procedures within the postpartum unit
• Assessing and identifying risk factors related to sepsis, venous thromboembolism (VTE/DVT), suicide, and pressure injuries
• Providing discharge education and assessments, including pain management
• Prioritizing patient care based on acuity and needs
• Utilizing AIDET and BSSR methods to enhance patient experience

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred
• Current certifications required: BLS, NRP

Duties & Procedures

Key duties include performing circumcisions and attending births while caring for postpartum patients in various stages of recovery.

Dress Code

Black scrub pants and Caribbean blue scrub top, vest, or jacket.
