Emergency Room Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

Location: Salem, VA

Number of Beds: 27

Number of Staff: 50 RNs / 25 Medics

Shift Information

• Day Shift: 1 charge nurse, 5 RNs, 2-3 medics; staffing increases by 4-5 RNs at 11 AM and by 1-2 RNs at 3 PM
• Night Shift: 1 charge nurse, 5 RNs, 2-3 medics

Patient Ratios

4-6 patients per nurse

Equipment

Electronic Medical Records (EMR): Meditech

Qualifications

• Required:
  • Completion of 2-3 travel assignments
  • 2-3 years of experience in an Emergency Room setting
• Preferred:
  • Experience in high acuity emergency departments
  • Experience in fast-paced environments with high patient volume
  • Experience with patient ratios of 5:1

Typical Procedures Performed

• Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI)
• Sepsis interventions
• Stroke protocol with tPA administration
• Central line placement
• Care of psychiatric patients
• Transfers to other facilities (EMTALA)

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) preferred
• ENPC (Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course) preferred
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) preferred
• NIH Stroke certification preferred

No floating required.

Dress Code

Scrub colors: Navy blue or white

Weekend Requirements

Four weekend shifts within a four-week scheduling period: Friday or Saturday for night shifts; Saturday or Sunday for day shifts.

Experience Requirement

Minimum of 2 years experience is required.
