Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)
General Information
This facility sees an average of 150-180 patients daily and consists of a main Emergency Department (ED) with 33 beds, including:
- 8 beds designated for Trauma/Resuscitation
- A pod with 4 Behavioral Health rooms (which can be converted to Medical)
- 5 pods divided into 4 rooms and a hall bed
There is also a vertical care area that functions as a waiting room and holding area to begin patient care, serving ESI 3 and ESI 4 patients. It may also be utilized as a higher acuity pod depending on the ED flow.
Minimum Experience Required
- Registered Nurse (RN): 2 years of Emergency Department experience (excluding travel experience preferred). Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience and 2 years outside of ED may be considered with manager approval.
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): 2 years of LPN experience in any acute care setting is required. Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience may be considered with manager approval.
Patient Types
The unit cares for a diverse patient population, from neonates to geriatric patients, including:
- Minor to critical cases
- Heavy trauma cases (Level 2 trauma center)
- Complete stroke care for patients exhibiting symptoms
- Behavioral Health patients, with responsibilities for evidence collection in sexual assault cases
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit patients
- Cardiac patients, with access to a catheter lab
Patient Ratios
- Registered Nurse (RN): 1:4-5
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): 1:4-5
- ED Technician: 1:10
Required Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN): BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS are required (CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred).
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and PALS are required (CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred).
Required Education
Completion of a nursing education program accredited by the appropriate board of nursing is mandatory. Registered Nurses must be licensed in South Dakota.
Skills Required for RN
- Experience managing patients across the described demographics
- Proficiency in ESI assessments during triage
- Ability to prioritize care based on patient needs, using critical thinking and effective communication
- Eligible ICU RNs may be offered to float to the ED; PCU RNs may float to ICU as needed.
Support on the Unit
- Emergency Department Technician (1:10 ratio)
- Dedicated Lead Technician
- Charge Nurse available on both day and night shifts
- 24/7 Phlebotomy services
- Access to Respiratory Therapy
- 24/7 physician coverage in the ED
- Security presence in the unit
Charting System/Equipment
- EPIC charting system (experience preferred)
- Omnicell
- Alaris
Floating Opportunities
Registered Nurses may float to Med/Surg, PCU, or ICU areas as a task nurse, not taking on full assignments.
Orientation Details
- 8 hours of general facility orientation
- 4 hours of ED-specific education
- A minimum of two 12-hour shifts in the unit; travelers contracted for 48 hours per week will receive at least three 12-hour shifts.
