Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Acute Care

Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) collaborates with the interdisciplinary team and works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to provide skilled nursing care and administer medications to patients.

Essential Functions

  • Participate in the nursing process including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the patient’s plan of care.
  • Provide direct nursing care and assist with patient care as directed by a Registered Nurse or Licensed Physician.
  • Contribute to the plan of care utilizing input from patients/families and healthcare team members.
  • Perform data collection and observations, tailoring approaches to the patient’s age, condition, and needs.
  • Collect and document both objective and subjective patient data accurately and promptly.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, ensuring safe and effective care delivery.
  • Perform phlebotomy services as required.
  • Evaluate and document the patient’s response to nursing interventions and adjust care plans as needed.
  • Recognize and report significant changes in patient conditions to the healthcare team.
  • Adhere to safety policies, procedures, and infection control protocols.
  • Accept accountability for nursing care and outcomes, complying with all HIPAA and OSHA regulations.

Licensing/Certification

  • Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure in the state of employment or LPN applicant (required).
  • BLS Basic Life Support certification (required).
  • ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification may be required for specialty areas.
  • PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification may be required for specialty areas.
  • NRP Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification may be required for specialty areas.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited LPN program.
  • One year of clinical patient care experience in an acute care setting or related field is preferred.

  • Ability to monitor patient conditions during treatment.
  • Administer medications safely and effectively.
  • Communicate patient conditions and care effectively with medical professionals.
  • Record and analyze patient medical histories accurately.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Exhibit dependability, adaptability, and flexibility in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Working Conditions

Work may be performed in high-stress environments with fluctuating workloads. Employees may encounter physical challenges, varied noise levels, and potential exposure to hazardous materials or infectious substances.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry weights up to 100 lbs.
  • Frequent bending, sitting, walking, and standing.
  • Manual dexterity for tasks involving fine motor skills.

Patient Population

The LPN must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care for patients across all age groups, including neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
